Green@Google: Stewart Brand

Stewart Brand, an icon of the environmental movement, outlines a provocative approach for reclaiming our planet. In his latest book, Brand proposes solutions for three profound transformations which are underway right now: climate change, urbanization and biotechnology. In 1966 he campaigned to have NASA release the then-rumored satellite image of the entire Earth as seen from space. He founded the CoEvolution Quarterly in 1974 which became The Whole Earth Catalog - the bible of the 70's "back to the land" movement. In CoEvolution Quarterly #4, he published a transcription of technology historian Lewis Mumford?s talk ?The Next Transformation of Man,? containing the statement: "... man has still within him sufficient resources to alter the direction of modern civilization, for we then need no longer regard man as the passive victim of his own irreversible technological development." Brand is one of the founders of the WELL with Larry Brilliant, the Global Business Network and the Long Now Foundation. He lives on a houseboat with his wife, Ryan Phelan, in Sausalito harbor.

Winter Pool Covers - Make an Informed Choice

!±8± Winter Pool Covers - Make an Informed Choice

Closing your pool for the winter is one of the most important steps in maintaining a pool properly. Do it right and spring opening is no sweat. Do it wrong and you could meet the creature from the black lagoon, up close and personal. Your choice of a winter cover is key to a successful pool closing. There are four types of generally available pool covers on the market today, each with its strengths and shortcomings. The main types are solid, mesh, mesh safety covers and solid safety covers.

Solid covers

Solid covers represent the largest number of pool covers sold in any given year. They are constructed of woven polyethylene "tapes" in what is called the scrim. Think of this as a flat piece of woven textile. This scrim then receives a coating of plastic on each side for waterproofing. While made by Canadian mills for many years most of these covers today come from Asia.

Advantages-Solid covers are relatively inexpensive and easy to install. When properly installed they do a reasonable job of keeping your pool clean and ready for the next season.

Disadvantages-The fabric is subject to wind damage due to flapping of the material, they collect water and debris and the methods to hold the cover in place can cause problems during the winter.

Mesh Covers

Mesh covers are made just like the solid covers but omit the plastic coating as they are designed to let water pass through.

Advantages-Mesh covers are lighter and less subject to wind damage. Water drains through so spring removal is easier and not as messy.

Disadvantages-By allowing water to penetrate mesh covers also allow fine dirt and sediment to penetrate and end up in the pool. Mesh covers also allow a small amount of light to reach the water, which can allow algae to grow as the weather warms toward pool opening time.

Safety Covers

A relatively new entrant, safety covers have gained a solid place in pool covers. They are called safety covers because they are recognized by the ASTM as preventing accidental access to a swimming pool when properly installed. To meet this standard the cover must support up to 4000 lbs.! They are constructed of a heavy-duty mesh reinforced with woven, heavy straps that cross the pool's width and breadth. They are anchored with heavy-duty springs hooked to anchors that are drilled and set into the pool deck.

Advantages

Safety covers give invaluable peace of mind knowing the pool is secure from any unauthorized access. As they are built to a minimum standard safety covers offer reliable quality and very long service life; up to ten years and more. If you have a custom pool with a unique shape this is probably the cover for you as a large percentage of these covers sold every year are custom made.

Disadvantages

All this peace of mind and performance comes at a price. Safety covers generally cost several times the price of a solid cover. Only pools with a deck can use a safety cover as the anchors for the covers must be in concrete or wood. This limits the safety cover option to in ground pools or above ground pools with decks all the way 'round and a minimum of 2 feet in width. Safety cover mesh also lets fine dirt and sediment pass through which some owners find objectionable.

Solid safety covers

Made exactly like mesh safety covers except the solid vinyl is substituted for the mesh fabric. Only incorporating a small, sealable mesh panel for drainage the solid safety covers lets virtually nothing through when installed.

Advantages

In addition to the advantages of a mesh safety cover the solid covers allow no light to penetrate or debris to enter virtually guaranteeing a clean pool in the spring.

Disadvantages

These suckers are HEAVY! A solid safety cover for an average in ground pool tips the scales at nearly twice the weight of a mesh safety cover. This has recently somewhat minimized with new, lighter fabrics from some manufacturers. Solid safety covers also command a premium of roughly 15% above the price of a mesh safety cover.

LFTR in 5 Minutes - THORIUM REMIX 2011

ThoriumRemix.com - Thorium is readily available & can be turned into energy without generating transuranic wastes. Thorium's capacity as nuclear fuel was discovered during WW II, but ignored because it was unsuitable for making bombs. A liquid-fluoride thorium reactor (LFTR) is the optimal approach for harvesting energy from Thorium, and has the potential to solve today's energy/climate crisis. LFTR is a type of Thorium Molten Salt Reactor (Th-MSR). This video summarizes over 6 hours worth of thorium talks given by Kirk Sorensen and other thorium technologists. THORIUM REMIX 2011 starts with a 5 minute TL;WL summary, to hold you over until you find your Ritalin. The Top 5 Ways to Winterize Your Swimming Pool

!±8± The Top 5 Ways to Winterize Your Swimming Pool

1. Invest in a pool cover. This is the first line of defense to keep your pool clean. During winter, a properly fixed pool cover can keep the majority of dust, debris and light out. Without incoming light, mould and algae can't fully grow. The cover also seals the pool against wind blown dirt. The same pool cover also reduces heat and evaporation loss during summer. With these year round benefits, they are one of the best investments you can make for a pool.

2. It might seem a waste, but add chemicals. Algae, bacteria etc can grow in most
temperatures so you need to prevent them. Add standard pool shock, algaecide, ph balancers and sanitizers. Some pool shops offer a winterizing treatment. Salt chlorinators make chlorination easy as they usually have a winter mode. Basically, a high level of chemicals acts as a preventer over winter.

3. Remove all debris to stop stain and build up. Vacuum and skim leaves, bugs and silt from the pool. A mixture of cleaning actions such as pool filtration, auto pool cleaner use, brushing the walls or simply using a scoop net, ensures the pool water, sides and floor are clean and clear.

4. Do periodic filtration and cleaning. Most auto cleaners can work underneath a pool cover. Pool filtration systems can be switched on as and when you need them. A routine test of the water's chemical balance can tell you when these actions are needed. Test kits can be bought from any pool shop with easy step by step instructions.

5. Fix the pool cover securely. Wind can easily blow debris under edges or corners of the cover. An unsecured pool cover can act a bit like a sail under wind pressure. Failure to properly secure the cover could result in it coming off or folding back, during high winds or heavy rains. If the cover is a loose style, weigh down at intervals with sand or water filled bags.

This salinity concentration is slightly less than the salinity level found in most human tears, thus it is very gentle to the swimmer's eyes and skin. Liquid chlorine (hypochlorite) is created through a process called electrolysis. As the saline passes through the chlorinator cell a low voltage DC current is applied. This applied energy current changes the salt dissolved in the water into liquid chlorine (hypochlorite). The liquid chlorine immediately mixes with the water leaving the chlorinator cell and flows into the swimming pool as clean, chlorinated water.

How to Convert Salt Water Aquarium Into Fresh Water One

!±8± How to Convert Salt Water Aquarium Into Fresh Water One

It is a very easy task. First take out everything that is in the aquarium such as rocks, gravel, decoration and all the paraphernalia. These have to be thoroughly washed if they are to be used again in the freshwater aquarium. Apart from the decoration, the equipment used has to be thoroughly rinsed as well. The better you will wash and clean it, the sooner your water will stabilize to a normal freshwater PH range. It is better not to use the old decorations. Get new stuff for your freshwater aquarium.

The remedy lies in your very kitchen. Get vinegar and water to scrub off the tank and make it squeaky clean. Avoid using an algae scrubber. It is better to use something that you can dispose off later so that the germs and grime are all tossed out in one go. If you plan to keep the old decorations, soak them in a diluted bleach solution. This will rid them off the diseases that they might be carrying.

It is better of you just throw the old gravel away. The old gravel might have bacteria from the previous fishes and might not be good for the freshwater fish that you will put in this new set up. Get a filter that goes well with the freshwater tank. There are many different types of filters available in the market and you will have to do some research to get the best one. If the previous owner has been using a power filter and you want to retain it, it is better to throw away its pad. Then set it up in an empty container, turn it on. This will clean it out thoroughly.
